Bridges Scope and Sequence

Bridges Scope and Sequence documents are available to assist in the evaluation of the curriculum as well as in planning implementation. Versions include an overview of the units and topics for each year, content by NCTM strands, and summary of the curriculum by month.

Bridges in Blended Classrooms

Combining grade levels is challenging in many respects, including adaptation of curriculum and materials. Bridges co-author, Allyn Fisher, has written new grade-level specific guides to assist in formulating an approach to using Bridges in blended classrooms. Bridges Gr 4 Case Study, Oregon

Results from the 2006-07 Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills shows that overall 83% of Bridges students from three districts met or exceeded the math standard, compared with 71% of their peers statewide.

Sojourner Elementary Honored

The Math Learning Center offers our sincere congratulations to Sojourner Elementary of North Clackamas Schools in Milwaukie OR, selected this year as an Intel School of Distinction in elementary mathematics. We applaud their approach to education as reflected in a commitment to teacher development and a focus on student centered-learning.

We’d also like to recognize board member Mike Wong who was instrumental in establishing this magnet school within the district. Sojourner was an early adopter of MLC materials and currently uses Bridges in Mathematics as their K-2 curriculum.

Bridges Meets CA Ed Code

All grade levels of Bridges in Mathematics were recently deemed to be in full compliance with the social content requirements of the California Education Code. 

Although Bridges is not on the state adoption list, schools and districts may use either Proposition 20 Lottery Funds or any Instructional Materials Funding Realignment Program (IMFRP) funds remaining after the purchase of required instructional materials. 

 

Number Corner K-5 Planners

Monthly Number Corner planners for K-3 are currently posted for the month of January with future months coming soon.  Planners for Grades 4 and 5 are available for all months of the 07-08 school year. These documents supplement the Number Corner Teachers’ Guides and are available at no charge.

Texas Approves Bridges K-5

Following the recommendation of the Texas Education Agency, the State Board of Education has officially recognized Bridges in Mathematics K-5 as 100% conforming to Texas standards, also know as TEKS.

“This is a big step for us,” said Dan Raguse, President of MLC. “We feel fortunate to have been engaged with math educators in Texas for many years and we welcome the opportunity to become a part of more classrooms.”

Districts across the state are currently evaluating nine curricula from six publishers. Decisions are due by April with implementation in the Fall of 2008.

 

Bridges Grade 5 Now Available

The Math Learning Center is pleased to announce that Bridges in Mathematics Grade 5 is now available along with Number Corner Grade 5.

Dan Raguse, President of MLC, noted the significance of this accomplishment. “This represents the culmination of a tremendous effort and is a wonderful milestone for our organization. Our writing, editorial, and production staff have done an incredible job in delivering three new grade levels in three years. We appreciate the support from our colleagues in math education, especially the reviewers and field test teachers who contributed so much of their time and expertise.

Districts that have recently chosen Bridges K-5 include Port Angeles, Washington and South Burlington, Vermont. They join many Bridges districts across the country who will add Grade 5 to complete their elementary curriculum implementation.


 

Materials for Computational Fluency

MLC is pleased to announce a new addition to the Bridges Breakouts product line. Building Computational Fluency is a collection of activities, games, worksheets, and assessments designed to help students master basic facts and key strategies.

“It is important to provide students with many opportunities and experiences as they develop their skills. We think this set of materials can be a useful supplement in many classrooms,” says Frazer Boergadine, VP of Programs.

Oregon Presidential Award

The Math Learning Center extends our congratulations to Tamara Rasmussen who was recently chosen as Oregon's state representative for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Elementary Mathematics Teaching. Tamara is a Kindergarten teacher in Roseburg, Oregon and a longtime user of Bridges in Mathematics.

Tamara noted that Number Corner "is everyone’s favorite part of the day, and because it is a daily activity, students are very confident and willing to take risks.”  More reflections on teaching from Tamara »
 

Wyoming Presidential Award

The Math Learning Center would like to congratulate Cathy McAtee on her recent selection as Wyoming's state representative for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Elementary Mathematics Teaching. Title 1 Awards for Spokane, WA

Congratulations to Arlington, Cooper, and Whitman elementary schools in Spokane, recipients of Washington State Title I Academic Achievement Awards. All three schools use Bridges in grades K-2 and each was recognized for excellence in mathematics. View Spokane Public Schools Announcement.
 

Bridges Article in Connect Magazine

Constructing Knowledge: Reconstructing No Child Left Behind by Bridges Grade 3 author Pia Hansen Powell leads the January / February 2007 issue of Connect Magazine published by Synergy Learning, Inc. The article highlights how Bridges in Mathematics builds fluency by integrating math across strands and with other subjects.
 

Navajo Nation Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Pearl Beck who was recently honored as 2006 teacher of the year by the Navajo Nation North Central Association. Pearl has taught kindergarten for many years at Tuba City Boarding School and began using Bridges in Mathematics soon after it was published, subsequently adding the role of workshop leader for The Math Learning Center. We appreciate her many contributions and wish her continued success in the classroom.
 

Outstanding Young Educator

Congratulations to Michael Porter of Bridgeport Elementary who received the Washington State ASCD Outstanding Young Educator Award.  Michael field tested Bridges in Mathematics Grade 4 and now uses it in his classroom while also providing leadership and implementation support to his colleagues.
 

Oregon Teacher of the Year

The Math Learning Center extends our congratulations to Jackie Cooke, Oregon Teacher of the Year for 2006-07. Jackie has served both as an MLC workshop leader and as a Bridges in Mathematics Grade 3 field tester. We appreciate Jackie’s leadership in math education and know she will continue to inspire others.

The Magic of Math in Roseburg, OR

Recently our friends in Roseburg, Oregon were the subject of an article and video from Edutopia, the George Lucas Educational Foundation. Roseburg School District has a long standing relationship with The Math Learning Center and adopted Bridges in Mathematics for their K-2 classrooms in 2000.
