Our Approach

From our inception 30 years ago The Math Learning Center (MLC) has been committed to improving math education by addressing the needs of classroom teachers and their students. Our workshops and materials promote teaching styles and strategies emphasizing active-learning experiences, problem-solving skills, independent investigation, and the use of visual models.

Origins

The Math Learning Center grew out of a project funded by the National Science Foundation to improve the teaching of mathematics. Motivated to continue developing methods of math instruction useful to teachers, three math educators established the Math Learning Center in 1976.   More »

Research and Development

Our research and development efforts draw upon three essential elements:

  • Funding support from organizations such as the National Science Foundation,
  • The rich body of literature regarding the learning process and math education.
  • Field testing and follow up feedback from practicing classroom teachers.

Implementation

Many elements of our approach can be implemented independently by individual teachers as the result of a workshop or purchase of resource materials. However, with our more comprehensive curricula and materials experience has shown that implementation is more successful when those involved take a holistic and a long-term view.   More »
