Grade Two - Sample One

Exploring Shapes, Symmetry, Area & Number is the fourth unit of Bridges Grade Two. The paper-and-pencil assessment from that unit includes shape identification and shape description. By comparing student work from the beginning and end of this 5-6 week unit, the teacher is able to see what growth and development has taken place. When examining this student assessment teachers look for greater accuracy in identifying triangles, and longer and more complete descriptions.

Assessment before the unit

Assessment after the unit

At the beginning of the unit Vincent only recognized the equilateral triangle as a “true” triangle, although it was allowed to be upside down. He has nothing to say about the properties of a triangle, but describes it in terms of a visual prototype—something it looks like.

Six weeks later, Vincent accepts anything that has 3 sides as a triangle, although he over-generalized a bit. He has much more to say about the properties of a triangle, including an observation about the lack of symmetry in a particular right triangle.
