Algebra Through Visual Patterns

Grade Level: 6-10

Learn ways to teach algebraic concepts with concrete, visual representations.  Develop strategies to deepen understanding while exploring activities related to patterns, relations, and functions.

Algebra Through Visual Patterns, offers a genuine alternative to the usual algebra course. It calls for an approach to learning in which students:

  • Explore algebraic concepts using manipulatives, models, and sketches.
  • Engage in meaningful discourse on their learning of mathematics.
  • Present their methods, rationale, and solutions to problems both orally and in writing.
  • Build on existing knowledge to increase their understanding.

This workshop is approriate for teachers whose students have a range of background and abilities.  It offers differentiated instruction through activities that are accessible at various levels of understanding from talented and gifted students to those who have been judged unsuccessful in previous algebra courses or are learning algebra for the first time.
