Visual Mathematics I
Grade level: 5-8
Experience teaching strategies that reflect the spirit and goals of the NCTM Principles and Standards. Learn creative ideas for teaching patterns and algebraic thinking, shape and symmetry, measurement, and probability. Explore hands-on activities that encourage student-invented algorithms for computing with fractions, whole numbers, decimals and percentages. Investigate conceptual models for factors, primes, and averages.
Examine ways to make statements such as “I conjecture…,” “I wonder…,” and “What if…” part of students’ every day dialog. Discuss ways to implement workshop activities in grades 5 – 6 and ways to adapt and extend them for grades 7 -8.
This workshop is for teachers whose students have varying backgrounds and abilities, including those who have been judged unsuccessful in math. It is valuable for special education teachers, teachers of English language learners and is appropriate for those who work with talented and gifted students. Such differentiation of learning and instruction is possible because the activities are accessible to students at various levels of understanding.
