Visual Mathematics II

Grade level: 6-9

Examine teaching ideas for hands-on, conceptually-based activities that align with the NCTM Principles and Standards. Learn strategies for teaching surface area and volume, variables and formulas, solving equations, operations with integers, data collection and analysis. The Pythagorean Theorem and symmetry and scaling in 2-D and 3-D are also explored.

See how concrete materials and effective classroom discourse make concepts accessible and challenging to students of all achievement levels. Discuss ways to implement workshop activities in grades 6 - 7 and ways to adapt and extend them for grades 8-9.

This workshop is for teachers whose students have varying backgrounds and abilities, including those who have been judged unsuccessful in math. It is valuable for special education teachers, teachers of English language learners and is appropriate for those who work with talented and gifted students. Such differentiation of learning and instruction is possible because the activities are accessible to students at various levels of understanding.
