Pre-Made Calendar Markers for Grade 1

If you find that you don’t have time in your busy schedule for children to make the calendar markers each month, we have developed pre-made sets for October, November, January, February, March, and April. We will add sets for December and May within the next couple of months.  All of the sets developed so far revolve around geometry, one of three major areas the NCTM Focal Points target for first grade instruction.

The new October markers provide opportunities for first graders to practice using key prepositions as they identify and discuss the position of ladybugs and butterflies relative to flowers and leaves on each marker.  The November set deals with 2-dimensional shapes in the world around us, and the January set looks at 3-dimensional shapes in the environment. The February and March markers revisit 2- and 3-dimensional shapes in a more formal way, and the April markers introduce congruent shapes.  All in all, the new sets offer a rich and steady flow of geometry instruction through the year.

These new markers are available for free on the Bridges Grade 1 Supplements page.   You will find instructions and blacklines to make the new markers within the following supplement sets:

October – Set C2
November – Set C3
January - Set C5
February – Set C6
March – Set C7

Where are Septembers markers?

Pre-made calendar markers for first grade for September have not been produced. The existing set of Insect Calendar Markers should be used for the first month as indicated in the Number Corner Teacher Guide.

I used the markers last year and they were a GREAT addition to the already fabulous # corner!   Thanks so much to MLC for continuing to develop materials that promote powerful mathematics thinkers.

Additional Number Corner Calendar Markers for Grade 1 for the months of December, April, and May are now available on the MLC Support for Materials website or by using the link(s) below.

December – Set C4

April – Set C8

May – Set A9

It seems that when I click on the April link that it doesn't work correctly. I was wondering if you could check it out for me please.  :-)

Beth - Thanks for the heads-up on the links. The above links are now updated including markers for three additional months.

We tried to download the new gr 1 claendar markers and were unable to do so...we received a message that said the requested page could not be located. Can anyone suggest a solution for how to get these for my gr 1 teachers? Thanks.

I just discovered the calendar markers and I am excited about using them with my kids. Geometry is always an area our children struggle with on our district assessment pieces and these markers are a great way to reinforce the concepts through out the year. I would love to see a set or two of calendar markers that would create a growing pattern. This is also an area of concern for our incoming first grade students, they get repeating patterns: however they need consistent reinforcement of growing patterns as well. (I know growing patterns appear in Monday Money, but I’d love to see other objects used as well) Love your materials and I’m looking forward to using all the materials for math next year as we change over to your program completely.

Thanks for the great suggestions, Nancy! The new January Calendar Markers for Grade 1, do involve a growing pattern of 3-D shapes. To access, this set of markers, go to the Grade 1 Support page on the MLC web site, click on the button that says Supplement Sets and Practice Pages, and find Supplement Set C5 Geometry, 3-D Shapes around Us January Calendar Pattern. I still have to create 2 more sets of markers for Grade 1 to complete the collection. One of those patterns will involve symmetry. The other will revolve around equations and unknowns, and I think I can work a growing number pattern into that one. We’ll be sure to let people know, via the Bridges Blog, as soon as these are posted on the web site.

Thanks so much to Allyn and the entire MLC team for continually improving upon the programs! The October calendar was fantastic. All my first graders are now proficient in the use of prepositions. Before the daily practice, it was difficult getting many of them to follow some directions as they were not familiar with these words. They are very excited about November markers and are anxious to make predictions.

Thanks for the tip, Allyn! I will definitely pass this on to our first grade teachers and the other coaches!!

I Love the language arts connection with the October calendar markers. I can’t wait to start it! Thank you for the resource.

You’re welcome, Catherine. Speaking of the language arts connection, Janis Heigl suggested that teachers using the new October markers put up a list of the key prepositions (above, below, behind, in front, near, far, and between) near the calendar grid. She said that kids had a lot of ways to describe the positions of the ladybug and the butterfly, but would not necessarily come up with those particular words. It seems to me that after some healthy discussion each day, you could have the kids choose the word from the list that best describes the position of the ladybug or the butterfly relative to the flower or the leaf.
