Great Source for Free Computer Based Math Games and Activities

If you’re looking for some really good computer-based math games and activities, be sure to check out KidsKount, the English counterpart of the ReckenWeb, which was started in 2000 by the Freudenthal Institute in the Netherlands. (The Freudenthal folks developed the Rekenrek counting frames, and have been working for years to promote best practices in math education around the world.)

The KidsKount web site features a large collection of applets for children ages 5 through 12. These range all the way from simple fact practice games such as Make 3, to activities such as Speedy Pictures, Frog, and Jumping on the Number Line, which are designed to facilitate the development of good number sense. Other activities,
such as Rotating Houses and Coloring Sides offer students wonderful opportunities to develop spatial problem-solving skills.

The activities on KidsKount are free, easy to use, easy to search by age, and FUN. This would be a good web site to share with parents who want to provide their children with extra support and/or challenge. Some of the activities would make great computer-based Work Places; there are others you might even choose in conjunction with Bridges sessions or Number Corner workouts.   For a few suggestions for each grade level to get you started click here.
