Number Corner Grade 2 Advice for February
Dennis Adams | February 1, 2011
This month your students create the calendar pieces. Unfortunately I don’t have an example to show, so would one of you send me a picture of what your kids create? This is a different challenge from the one in November.

After the class decides on two items, they make whichever one of the two that appeals to them without any regard on your part as to how many of each you will end up with. (Be sure to have students make 28 pieces – some may need to make two.) Then the children must figure out how to pattern the 28 markers. Look closely at the example on page 171. You’ll see it’s ABAAB, and the last sequence gets cut off after the second "A." Remind the children that if they have repeated the pattern, they can stop in the middle of any following cycle.
How are you coming along with your Base Ten Bank? Hopefully you’ve passed 100 by now. Continue on in the same manner this month. However, this month you don’t need to post the ten-strips with dots to discuss strategies unless you feel your class is in need of such a help. Hopefully you’ll get close to, or over 300 by the 28th, as you need to begin to subtract from this number in March! Remember to use the Student Book pages 40-41 somewhere in the third and fourth weeks. This will give you a good assessment of how everyone is handling the regrouping task.
The Workout Wheel continues as in last month except that the quantities are now over 20. The strategies guide on page 181 has new examples for you to refer to as you work with these larger quantities.
I hope you were able to use some or all of the Weight Cards in January. This month we go on to the capacity cards. Before the 1st of February you need to gather 3 oz. paper cups, several 1/2 cup measuring cups, and some 8 oz. containers. You also need to gather containers to match the items on the Capacity Cards: a glass or plastic tumbler, a glass or plastic jar, a coffee cup or mug, a bowl, a pint-sized cottage cheese carton, an empty tin can, a quart-sized yogurt carton, and an empty school milk carton. A homework suggestion: copy the items from this list and ask each student to bring in one of these things. Then at the end of the month, box the capacity tools up and save them for next year!
