MathTappers: Math Apps to Help Children Make Sense of Mathematics

At the Northwest Math Conference in October I listened to an exciting presentation by Dr. Tim Pelton and Dr. Leslee Francis Pelton from the University of Victoria (Canada). With the support of others at the university, they have developed MathTappers, a series of free math apps designed to help children make sense of mathematics. Since many apps rely on drill and instant recall, I found it thrilling to hear them talk about visual models and the emphasis on promoting mathematical understanding.

Many of the visual models used in MathTappers complement models found in Bridges. Teachers with available mobile devices (iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone), may use the apps at school. Those without classroom access could suggest them to parents for use at home. Currently available apps include:

  • Clock Master
  • Find Sums
  • Multiples
  • Estimate Fractions
  • Equivalents
  • Number Line
  • Carbon Choices
  •

Happy app-ing!
