Sir Cumference and the Viking's Map, the seventh book in the series by Cindy Neuschwander, will intrigue adventurers in grades 3-5.

Vonnie Oyer teaches fourth grade Bridges at 91 Elementary School in Canby, Oregon. After using the Word Resource Cards for commutative and associative property, she decided to make additional cards for zero, and identity and distributive properties of multiplication.

Recently, a teacher asked me why other bases are explored in Bridges. I could relate to her question, as I wondered the same thing when I first encountered the lessons with Base 5 in third grade and Base 4 in fourth grade. While at some level I understood that exposure to other bases would lead children to a deeper understanding of place value and our Base 10 system, it wasn't until I saw it in action that I could fully appreciate the results.

Kim Hornbeck, a teacher and math coach in Casper, Wyoming, developed a set of posters to help her students remember multiplication and division strategies as taught in Bridges. These 8 1/2″ x 11″ posters will be especially helpful to grade 4 and 5 teachers during Bridges Unit 1 and grade 3 teachers during and after Unit 4.
