Money Pieces
Visualize money values and relationships with U.S. currency and money value pieces.
App Tutorial
Money Pieces helps students visualize and understand money values and relationships. Students can choose between two versions of coins and bills in the app. Currency pieces replicate the appearance and relative size of U.S. coins and the dollar bill. Money value pieces represent the values of coins and the dollar bill using an area model in which 1 square unit is equal to 1 penny. Nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollar bills are represented by arrays equal to their value. In this way, the money value pieces help build fluency with common currency and can also be used to model and compute with fractions and decimals.
This virtual version of the manipulative is an open-ended educational tool, ideal for elementary classrooms and other learning environments that use laptops, iPads, or Chromebooks.
Money value pieces are a key model used in Bridges in Mathematics. Online preview available.
