Exciting Updates to the Number Line App
The Number Line app is already a great tool to help students visualize the relationship among numbers, as well as to demonstrate different strategies for counting, comparing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Now, it’s even better with the addition of some great new features you’ve been requesting!
Fractions and Decimals
Since introducing the Number Line app, the most frequent request has been for the ability to switch between integers and fractions. We’ve responded by incorporating not only fractions but also decimals. To switch from integers to fractions or decimals, simply tap or click the “Select Numbering” button and then choose “Fractions” or “Decimals.”
The “Select Numbering” menu has a new checkbox too. Tap or click that checkbox to turn negative numbers on or off. When you turn them on, you’ll be able to move the number line to the left and see negative integers, fractions, or decimals, depending on your setting.
Go to X
The last big feature we added is the ability to jump to a location on the number line that can’t be reached by scrolling. All you need to do is tap or click the “Go to Number” button in the upper left corner and enter the number you want to see, and then tap or click the “OK” button. The app will then jump to that section of the number line.
We’ve added a few other features, such as the ability to move custom tick marks above the number line, but you’ll need to check out the app to see everything. Make sure to tap or click the “i” button in the bottom right corner for instructions on how to use all the features.
Let us know what you think of the app and the updates in the comments or on Twitter. We’d love to see how you’re using our apps with your students! Be sure to tag us on Twitter with @MLCmath.
The Number Line app is available to use as a web app or can be downloaded for use on iPads and ChromeBooks.
