The Practice of Reflection
Reflection is an important part of teaching and learning.
A teacher thinks back to a lesson, mulling over what went well, what worked, and what didn’t go so well. An effective teacher uses those reflections to improve teaching and learning in the classroom. You can help students participate in this same kind of reflection. Inviting students to reflect upon what happens in the classroom and their role in it shifts some responsibility from the teacher to the students. In the process of reflecting, students become aware of and invested in their roles in the classroom community and come to understand that they have the power to influence what happens in the classroom and take charge of their own learning.
