Free Math Games for K-8 Students

I appreciate the wonderful introduction in the previous MLC Blog entry. This is my first of a series of occasional blog posts, and I look forward to writing more.

More than 8,000 people have downloaded Using Math Games and Word Problems to Increase the Math Maturity of K-8 Students, a free book from Information Age Education (IAE). The book emphasizes using simple, inexpensive games and math manipulatives to create rich learning environments. With a focus on communicating in the language of math, enjoying math activities, and solving word problems, these learning environments help students build math experience and insight.

The goal is for students to have fun while learning math thinking and problem-solving skills and developing math understanding that will last a lifetime. Included are both underlying math education theory and a variety of games that encourage students to develop and test their own strategies to deal with recurring math-related problems and situations.
